5 Ways High-Achieving Women Benefit from Therapy

If you are like most of my clients, you might question if you need therapy. After all, you look like you are crushing it on paper. You have the career you worked your ass off for (and the student loans to match), you’re praised for your willingness to take on extra shifts, and you get shit done and do it well. You’re not failing at work, but you’re certainly not thriving either. Internally, it’s a different story. Burnout is the norm, anxiety is in the bed next to you, keeping you up, and you question yourself more than others think you do. You have the insight, but you don’t know how to make the changes you desperately need. I can help. Below are a few ways that high-achieving women benefit from therapy.

1.      Learn How to Rest Without Guilt

A woman is sitting with coffee while reading her book. This image represents how therapy can help high-achieving women in Austin, Texas learn to relax without guilt.

If you’re anything like me 10 years ago or my current clients, you struggle with taking your PTO and truly resting. Ten years ago I struggled to take time off until my body made me do it (chronic stress = weakened immune system). And when you do take a break, you are filled with guilt and can’t rest because your mind is racing about everything that still needs to be done. In therapy, my clients get to the root of what makes rest and prioritizing themselves difficult. They unlearn beliefs about what it means to be productive and they untangle their worth from their productivity. You deserve to rest without guilt.

2.      Be More Productive Without Running on Empty

Sounds counterintuitive, right? Your whole life, you have been taught that studying more, learning more, and doing more would make you successful and more productive. But it comes at a steep cost. You. Your health. Your relationships. Your time. My ambitious clients learn skills and strategies so they can be productive and successful without sacrificing what means the most to them. Burnout, gone! Sleep, restful!

3.      Know Your Worth Outside of Your Career

My clients leave therapy knowing that their worth isn’t tied to their career. Heck, it isn’t even tied to their relationship status, or how much money they bring in, or what they give to others. Through therapy, my clients are able to disentangle their worth from their achievements.

4.      Be Confident Without Always Second-Guessing Yourself

Overthinking clinical decisions or fear about an upcoming court case keeps my clients up at night. The overthinking and relentless anxiety has always been there, but wasn’t it supposed to stop after you got the degree?? In therapy, my clients learn to trust themselves more deeply so that overthinking doesn’t take up as much mental space.

5.      Live a Life in Alignment with Your Values

Your life should not be all about work. I’m sorry, but it shouldn’t. And I think deep down, you know it, too. You’re tired of “bringing work home,” snapping at your partner, and not spending as much time as you would like with your family and friends. Therapy helps my high-achieving clients get very clear on their values and what matters to them. It might be fitness, adventure and travel, faith, community, or culture. By getting clear on their values, we are able to determine the areas in their life where they might benefit from making some shift so that they are living a fulfilled life.
